The status of research on anaerobes in Japan.

چکیده
The present article describes the recent status of research on anaerobes in Japan by reviewing publications from the last few years in the Japanese Journal of the Association for Anaerobic Infection Research. Most studies were categorized into clinical infection, susceptibility and resistance mechanisms, epidemiology and typing systems, and pathogenesis and virulence factors; clinical infection and susceptibility studies were the most common. The present article focuses on recent research studies on anaerobic bacteria and their diseases conducted in Japan. In Japan, clinical laboratories are the most active location of studies on anaerobes because anaerobic culture has become easy to perform by use of an anaerobic pouch and gas generator. Thus, studies of clinical infection and susceptibility testing of isolates are popular. Clinical laboratories have, however, been under pressure because of limited budgets from health insurance, a pressure that has hampered the spread of anaerobic culture into many clinical laboratories. Studies of anaerobes in research laboratories are not active, although molecular biological studies on the pathogenicity of Clostridium species such as Clostridium perfringens have been conducted at a few research laboratories. As a consequence, studies of epidemiology and typing systems, pathogenesis and virulence factors of anaerobes, and other basic studies have been less active.

Assessment of epidermal growth factor receptor status in glioblastomas
Objective(s): Our previous study showed that a newly designed tracer radioiodinated 6-(3-morpholinopropoxy)-7-ethoxy-4-(3'-iodophenoxy)quinazoline ([125I]PYK) is promising for the evaluation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) status and prediction of gefitinib treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. EGFR is over-expressed and mutated also in glioblastoma. In the present study, the ...
متن کاملThe Status of Stress Myocardial Perfusion Imaging Using 99mTc Pharmaceuticals in Japan: Results from a Nationwide Survey
Objective(s): To appropriately use one-day myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) with 99mTc radiopharmaceuticals (i.e. to avoid shine-through artifacts), injection doses need to be optimized and dose ratios between the 1st and 2nd scans should be maintained at ≥ 3. However, the current state of practice in Japan is unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to clarify the details of MPI protocols us...

The goal of this research was to investigate whether at appendectomy for uncomplicated appendicitis (neither gangrenous nor perforated), the coverage of anaerobes with metronidazole for prophylaxis of infectious comlications of appendectomy has any additional benefit. Appendicitis is the most frequent cause of acute abdomen that requires surgery. The two complications of appendectom...

SUMMARY During 2 years, 212 patients with PID and 160 women with no sign of PIO (as control group) were selected for the detection of aerobic an<l anaerobic bacteria and possible cause of the disease. Specimens from 58 patients and 60 controls were taken by laparoscopy and laparotomy, 154 patients and 100 controls by swabs from endocervical canal. From laparoscopy and laparotomy group(58) 9 ...
متن کاملDefining and Acting on Global Health: The Case of Japan and the Refugee Crisis
What counts as global health? There has been limited discourse to date on the ways in which country-level contexts may shape positioning in global health agendas. By reviewing Japan’s response to the refugee crisis, we demonstrate a clash between rhetoric and action on global responsibility, and suggest that cultural and historical factors may be related to the ways of perceiving and acting upo...
